Syracuse is situated on the only natural port from the eastern coast of the Sicily. It is an archaeological center besides being a commercial and a fishing one.
Having
a Greek origin, Syracuse had its splendour period under the Corinzi, the
founders of the town. This period lasted until the 3rd century,
when it was conquered by the Romans, starting its long hegemony
on the entire island and becoming the capital of Sicily. Later on it
decayed under the Arabs.
